School Counselor

Thoreau School Counselor: Mr. Botello

LTS Counselor

About me:

I’m Jesse Botello, the school counselor at Thoreau Elementary, where I’m beginning my third year supporting our students, staff, and families. My role is to help every student grow academically, socially, and emotionally while building a safe and welcoming school environment.

At Thoreau, I partner with teachers, parents, and the community to provide classroom lessons, small group support, and individual counseling. I also assist families by connecting them with school and community resources, making sure they feel supported both inside and outside of the classroom. In addition, I oversee 504 plans, lead our 5th grade student leadership group HOPS (Helping Our Peers Succeed), and collaborate on school-wide initiatives and committees that promote belonging, resilience, and student success. Most of all, I’m here to ensure that every Thoreau student feels seen, supported, and empowered to thrive.

Classroom Lessons

I partner with classroom teachers to develop and deliver Social Emotional lessons. I visit classrooms throughout the year to teach these lessons that help students build social-emotional skills, practice self-regulation, and strengthen problem-solving strategies. These lessons give every student tools they can use both in and out of the classroom.

Small Groups

Small group sessions give students a supportive space to connect with peers, practice new skills, and receive guidance around topics like friendship, coping strategies, or school success. Groups are designed to build confidence and community.

Individual Counseling

Some students benefit from one-on-one time to talk through challenges, set goals, or build strategies for success. I will see a student individually for various reasons, but I do not provide on-going therapy. Please let me know if you are interested in on-going counseling services from a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), and I can assist with that process.

Connection to Resources

Families don’t have to navigate challenges alone. I help connect students and families with school and community resources, including food security, clothing, housing, and mental health services.  Please contact me at jbotello@lwsd.org
