Principals' Corner

Dear Families,

Welcome back, Frogs! 🐸

This week we welcomed all 1st-5th grade students on Tuesday. Our new AP, Kirsten, and I were able to visit every classroom on the first day and see all our new and returning students. The beginning of the year brings such joy, excitement, and anticipation. We are fortunate to have such amazing students and families here at Thoreau. We look forward to welcoming our new Kindergarten students on Friday as well.

As students begin to adjust to the new routine this fall, we will be holding our Back to School Night on Thursday, September 22nd from 5:30-7pm. This evening will be an opportunity for families to see their child’s classroom, learn about the teacher and explore some of the content being covered in class this year. Primary and Intermediate classes will be held at separate times as follows:

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT, SEPTEMBER 22nd

5:30-6pm: Grades 1-2 and 2/3 Quest visit classrooms

6-6:10pm: Transition to gym

6:10-6:20pm: Welcome from Principal Lane in the gym

6:20-6:30pm: Transition to intermediate classrooms

6:30-7pm: Grades 3-5 and 4/5 Quest visit classrooms

Because Kindergarten recently held Kinder Orientation, Round-Up, and Family Connection Meetings, Kindergarten classrooms will not be part of our Back to School night.

We look forward to a year full of learning, laughter, and connection this year!

With Gratitude,

Ms. Lane

School Meals for the 2022-23 School Year:

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the USDA has funded free meals to all students. The USDA free meal waiver is set to expire on June 30, 2022. As a result, the district will start charging fees again for lunch and breakfast starting in the 2022-23 school year. Pricing for school meals will be as follows:

There will be no charge for those eligible to receive benefits for free or reduced meals who have a current application on file. (Reduced price subsidy for both breakfast and lunch at all levels will be paid by the state). To receive meal assistance benefits for the 2022-23 school year, a new application for free and reduced meals will need to be filled out. We strongly encourage all families who might be eligible for benefits to submit an application. Applications for the 2022-2023 school year will be available to complete online (preferred method) through Myschoolapps , or by manually filling out an application found on the district website: Application.

Purchasing meals made easy

Pre-pay for meals in advance by dropping off cash or a check to the office or send the money with your student to turn into their teacher!

Additional Benefits for Free and Reduced:

Students that are eligible for Free and Reduced meals are also eligible to receive fee waivers for athletics, extracurricular activities, and ASB cards. In order for the district to waive these fees, you must provide consent to share your Free and Reduced eligibility status for this purpose. You can provide consent on the Free and Reduced application. If you are already qualified for free and reduced meals or you are directly certified through the State, you can provide your consent to share eligibility information in Family Access by following these instructions|instrucciones. You can also complete a Consent to Share Form online and email it to F-RMeals@lwsd.org. For more information about fee waivers, please visit our website: How to Waive Extra-Curricular Fees - Lake Washington School District (lwsd.org)

  • School Counselors can also help connect you with benefits that you may be eligible for if you qualify for free and reduced meals.

Parking Lot Safety

A quick instruction guide to parking lot etiquette to ensure lines of cars flow efficiently and safety remains top priority;  please follow these traffic tips:

  • Buses and day care vans only in the lane closest to 138th.

  • Drop off/pick up from right lane only.

  • The left lane is only for cars driving through or to park.

  • Drop off/pick up children on the curb side only

  • Parents are asked to stay in their vehicle.

  • Continuously Pull Forward- do not park or let your child out if the car in front of you is moving.

  • Do not pickup/drop off students in the upper gate area by the portables on 84th

  • Use designated crosswalks

  • If you park, please walk your child through the parking lot

Thoreau is an idle-free zone. Turn off your engines as you wait in pick up lane.

Dogs on Campus

In order to ensure our schools are safe and comfortable for all inhabitants, the district has developed the following requirements regarding dogs:

  • Dogs cannot be on campus during school hours and during drop-off/pick-up.

  • During non-school hours, dogs must be on leash.

  • Scoop your own poop! We don’t want to step in it during recess!
